Is private betting legal?

The question tested for every country: can Person A make a direct monetary bet with Person B — a one-off, genuinely private wager between two natural persons — without a bookmaker, betting operator, platform or other intermediary?

Important — not legal advice

This page is a general legal screening, not legal advice. A “generally possible” rating does not mean every type of private bet is lawful, that winnings are tax-free, or that any platform may facilitate the transaction. State or provincial law can override the national picture (especially the USA, Canada, Australia, India and Argentina). Laws change frequently — check your local rules and, when in doubt, consult a qualified lawyer in your jurisdiction.

A private A↔B wager and a platform matching A with B are two separate regulatory questions. Facilitating, matching, locking stakes or settling bets for others can require licensing even in countries where the same wager between two private individuals would be lawful.

Ratings: Generally possible — a private 1-to-1 wager is generally possible under the country's general gambling framework; Prohibited — gambling or private wagering is generally prohibited or not safely permitted; Unclear — the law is sufficiently restrictive, fragmented or ambiguous that a general rating is not justified.

This screening reflects general national frameworks as of 2026 and may not capture recent changes. SideBet.vip also maintains its own list of prohibited jurisdictions — see our Terms of Use.
